In 2001-02, a total of 366,419 occupied bed days were spent in Tasmanian public hospitals. Over half (50.8%) of these bed days were occupied by patients in the Greater Hobart-Southern Region, 33.7% were occupied by patients in the Northern Region, and the remaining 15.5% were occupied by patients in the Mersey-Lyell Region. Females accounted for 52.7% of occupied bed days in Tasmanian public hospitals, and males accounted for 47.3%.

In 2001-02, a total of 207,496 occupied bed days were spent in Tasmanian private hospitals. Females accounted for 59.3% of occupied bed days in Tasmanian private hospitals, and males accounted for 40.7%.
