CULTURAL INDUSTRIES BY SEX AND AGE
OVERVIEW Of all persons employed in cultural industries in the week prior to the 2011 Census in Australia, 1% resided in the Northern Territory. Of those employed in the Northern Territory, 2,770 (3%) persons reported their main occupation in a cultural industry. Of those employed in a cultural industry, 1,240 (45%) were employed in a non-cultural occupation. The cultural industries that employed the most persons were nature reserves and conservation parks operation (437), creative artists, musicians, writers and performers (374) and free-to-air television broadcasting (210). EMPLOYMENT BY SEX More females (1,426) than males (1,343) were employed in cultural industries in the Northern Territory. Conversely, there were more males than females employed in cultural industries nationally. Cultural industries employing high proportions of males were nature reserves and conservation parks operation (63%), and architectural services (62%). EMPLOYMENT BY AGE Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 17% of all persons employed in cultural industries in the Northern Territory. The cultural industries with the largest number of persons aged 15 to 24 years were nature reserves and conservation parks operation (76), motion picture exhibition (46), and newspaper and book retailing (41). The cultural industry with the largest proportion of persons aged 15 to 24 years in the Northern Territory was motion picture exhibition (58%). Only 7% of employed persons in each of religious services, and creative artists, musicians, writers and performers were aged 15 to 24 years. The cultural industries with the most persons aged 55 years and over in the Northern Territory were creative artists, musicians, writers and performers (86) and religious services (71). The cultural industry employing 50 persons or more with the largest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over in the Northern Territory was religious services (34%). Nature reserves and conservation parks operation, and motion picture exhibition had the smallest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over (both 9%). Motion picture exhibition also had the smallest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over nationally.
