CULTURAL INDUSTRIES BY SEX AND AGE
OVERVIEW Of those employed in Victoria in the week prior to the 2011 Census, 95,553 persons reported their main occupation in a cultural industry. Of those employed in a cultural industry, 47,040 (49%) were employed in a non-cultural occupation. The cultural industries that employed the greatest number of persons were printing (10,440), architectural services (10,236), advertising services (8,471), religious services (6,801) and other specialised design services (6,440). Of all persons employed in cultural industries in Australia, 27% resided in Victoria. The dominant cultural industry with the highest proportion of employed persons in Victoria was book publishing, employing 41% of the national figure. By comparison, only 12% of persons in cable and other subscription broadcasting resided in Victoria. EMPLOYMENT BY SEX More males (49,794) than females (45,759) were employed in cultural industries in Victoria. There were also more males than females employed in cultural industries nationally. Cultural industries employing high proportions of males in Victoria were music and other sound recording activities (82%), post-production services and other motion picture and video activities (74%), and cable and other subscription broadcasting (72%). Cultural industries employing the largest proportions of females were libraries and archives (76%), arts education (72%) and book publishing (63%). The same cultural industries had the largest proportions of females nationally. PERSONS EMPLOYED IN SELECTED CULTURAL INDUSTRIES(a)(b), By sex, Vic., 2011 EMPLOYMENT BY AGE Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 13% of all persons employed in cultural industries in Victoria. Cultural industries with the highest number of persons aged 15 to 24 years were motion picture exhibition (1,917), newspaper and book retailing (1,258), advertising services (1,046), arts education (925), and video and other electronic media rental (837). PERSONS EMPLOYED IN SELECTED CULTURAL INDUSTRIES(a), By age, Vic., 2011 The cultural industries with the highest proportion of persons aged 15 to 24 years were motion picture exhibition (62%), and video and other electronic media rental (54%). These were the cultural industries with the largest proportion of persons aged 15 to 24 years nationally. In contrast, only 3% of persons in funeral, crematorium and cemetery services were aged 15 to 24 years. The cultural industries with the highest number of persons aged 55 years and over were religious services (2,423), printing (2,113), architectural services (1,729), newspaper and book retailing (1,305), and creative artists, musicians, writers and performers (1,111). PERSONS EMPLOYED IN SELECTED CULTURAL INDUSTRIES(a), By age, Vic., 2011 The cultural industry with the highest proportions of persons aged 55 years and over in Victoria, were funeral, crematorium and cemetery services (36%) (which was also the largest proportion nationally), and religious services (36%). Motion picture exhibition had the lowest proportion of persons aged 55 years and over (6%), also following the national trend.
