NATIONAL SOCIAL HOUSING SURVEY
CONTACT DETAILS Data custodian: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Telephone: (02) 6244 1000 Email: info@aihw.gov.au Web Address: https://www.aihw.gov.au/ DESCRIPTION The National Social Housing Survey (NSHS) is run by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and collects data on social housing tenants and their housing experiences. First undertaken in 1996 with public housing tenants, the NSHS has expanded to include mainstream community housing tenants (2001) and state owned and managed Indigenous housing (SOMIH) tenants (2005). In 2016, the NSHS sampled tenants of SOMIH, public and community housing programs (collectively referred to as ‘social housing’). To date, Indigenous community housing, while an important form of social housing for Indigenous Australians, has not been covered in the NSHS. COLLECTION HISTORY Collection commenced: 1996 Breaks in series: None Other details: COLLECTION METHODOLOGY The 2016 NSHS collected data from tenants of public and community housing using mail-out self-completion paper questionnaires. Additionally, surveys could also be completed online. SCOPE AND COVERAGE The NSHS is a national survey encompassing a range of tenancies sampled by geography and remoteness. In 2016, the NSHS was conducted across three social housing programs: public housing, SOMIH, and community housing. Indigenous community housing was out of scope for the 2016 survey. DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Though not specifically a family and domestic violence survey, the NSHS provides data tables of the proportion of tenants using community and health services, including domestic and family violence services.
