It also collects information about harms arising from drug use, including the occurrence of verbal abuse, physical abuse, and being put in fear by someone affected by alcohol or illicit drugs, including by their current or ex-spouse/partner or other relative. COLLECTION HISTORY Collection commenced: 1998 Break in series: None Other details: COLLECTION METHODOLOGY The NDSHS is a national household survey of non-institutionalised persons aged 12 years and over, conducted via a paper form, online form, or telephone interview. The sample is selected by way of stratified, multistage random sampling. SCOPE AND COVERAGE The scope includes persons aged 12 years and over residing in private dwellings. Excluded from sampling were non-private dwellings (hotels, motels, boarding houses, etc.) and institutional settings (hospitals, nursing homes, other clinical settings such as drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres, prisons, military establishments and university halls of residence). Homeless persons were also excluded as well as the territories of Jervis Bay, Christmas Island and Cocos Island. DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Respondents were asked if they had been verbally or physically abused, or put in fear, in the past 12 months, by persons affected by or under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs, including by their current or ex-spouse/partner or other relative. DEFINITION OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE Whilst sexual violence data is not explicitly collected in the NDSHS, respondents were asked if any of the alcohol-related or drug-related incidents of physical abuse involved sexual abuse.
