RECORDED CRIME - OFFENDERS, 2014-15 - NORTHERN TERRITORY

TOTAL OFFENDERS

In 2014-15, there were 11,733 offenders in the Northern Territory, which represented a decrease of 3% (or 381 offenders) from 2013-14. The (crude) offender rate decreased by 3% to 5,684 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over.

The Northern Territory had the highest offender rate per 100,000 persons for both male and female offenders (7,758 and 3,334 respectively).

SEX

Between 2013-14 and 2014-15:
  • The number of male offenders decreased by 2% (or 205 offenders) to 8,502.
  • The number of female offenders decreased by 5% (or 172 offenders) to 3,228.

For 2014-15, the Northern Territory had the highest proportion of female offenders, making up 28% of total offenders for the jurisdiction.

AGE STANDARDISED OFFENDER RATES

In 2014-15, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander age standardised offender rate was 8,763 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over. The non-Indigenous age standardised offender rate was 1,000 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over.
    PRINCIPAL OFFENCE

    Between 2013-14 and 2014-15, the four key movements in principal offences in the Northern Territory were:
    • Illicit drug offences (up 18% to 1,321 offenders);
    • Acts intended to cause injury (down 11% to 2,902 offenders);
    • Public order offences (down 10% to 4,166 offenders); and
    • Offences against justice (up 17% to 842 offenders).

    YOUTH OFFENDERS
    • In 2014-15, 12% of offenders were youth offenders, which was the lowest proportion of any state or territory.
    • The most prevalent principal offence for youth offenders was Acts intended to cause injury, making up 18% (or 258 offenders) of the total.

    REPEAT OFFENDERS

    In 2014-15, 34% of offenders were proceeded against on two or more separate occasions within the year. This was the highest proportion of repeat offenders of any state or territory.
