At 30 June 2017:

  • Nine in ten (90% or 10,199 prisoners) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were male. Similarly, for the non-Indigenous prisoner population, just over nine in ten prisoners were male (93% or 27,690 prisoners). (Table 21)
  • The most common offences/charges for both male and female Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners were:
    • Acts intended to cause injury (36% or 3,618 prisoners, and 32% or 351 prisoners, respectively); and
    • Unlawful entry with intent (14% or 1,455 prisoners and 14% or 156 prisoners, respectively).
  • For male non-Indigenous prisoners, the most common offences/charges were Illicit drug offences (19% or 5,151 prisoners) followed by Acts intended to cause injury (18% or 5,076 prisoners) and Sexual assault (14% or 3,848).
  • For nearly one-third of non-Indigenous females, their offence/charge was Illicit drug offences (29% or 628 prisoners). (Table 5)
