Sentenced prisoners

At 30 June 2015:

    • Four in five (81%) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners sentenced in the previous 12 months had been imprisoned previously, compared to 58% of non-Indigenous prisoners. (Table 8)

    • The median aggregate sentence length for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners was 2.0 years, compared to 3.5 years for non-Indigenous prisoners. (Table 10)

    • The median expected time to serve for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners was 1.2 years, compared to 2.1 years for non-Indigenous prisoners. (Table 11)

    • The median aggregate sentence length for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sentenced prisoners was longest in South Australia (3.3 years) and shortest in Northern Territory (1.2 years). (Table 25)

    • The median expected time to serve for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sentenced prisoners was longest in South Australia (2.5 years) and shortest in Queensland and the Northern Territory (both 1.0 years). (Table 27)
