UNSENTENCED PRISONERS

The proportion of prisoners who were unsentenced was slightly higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners (24%) than for non-Indigenous prisoners (23%). These proportions are unchanged since 2012. (Table 8)

Time on remand

Time on remand is influenced by a number of factors, particularly the time it takes for a case to come before a court. Time on remand as reported here is time on remand to date as at 30 June 2013, not the total time spent on remand. For information about interpreting median time on remand based on a census 'snapshot' see Explanatory Notes, paragraphs 41-43.

The median number of months spent on remand by unsentenced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners in custody at 30 June 2013 was 2.1 months, a slight decrease from 2012 (2.2 months). For unsentenced non-Indigenous prisoners, the median number of months spent on remand at 30 June 2013 was 3.1 months, which remained unchanged from 2012. (Table 13)
