PRIOR IMPRISONMENT

At 30 June 2013, there were proportionally more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners than non-Indigenous prisoners with prior imprisonment. Over three quarters (77%) of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners had a prior adult imprisonment under sentence, compared with just over half (51%) of non-Indigenous prisoners.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners, the most serious offences/charges with the highest proportion of prisoners who were recorded as having had prior adult imprisonment were:

  • offences against justice procedures (93%)
  • traffic and vehicle regulatory offences (83%)
  • abduction and harassment (81%).

In comparison for non-Indigenous prisoners, the most serious offences/charges with the highest proportion of prisoners who were recorded as having had prior adult imprisonment were:
  • offences against justice procedures (81%)
  • unlawful entry with intent (77%)
  • traffic and vehicle regulatory offences (69%). (Table 8)
