MOST SERIOUS OFFENCE/CHARGE

At 30 June 2013, the most common offences/charges for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners (either sentenced or unsentenced) were:

• acts intended to cause injury (34%)
• unlawful entry with intent (16%)
• offences against justice procedures (11%)
• robbery and extortion (10%)
• sexual assault (9%).

Together, these offences/charges accounted for over three quarters (77%) of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners on 30 June 2013. (Table 4)

In contrast, the most common offences/charges for non-Indigenous prisoners at 30 June 2013, were:

• illicit drug offences (16%)
• acts intended to cause injury (15%)
• sexual assault (13%)
• unlawful entry with intent, and homicide (both 10%). (Table 4)
