NORTHERN TERRITORY HOMICIDE AND RELATED OFFENCES There were five victims of Homicide and related offences recorded in the Northern Territory in 2016 compared to sixteen victims in 2015. This is the lowest number of victims of this offence recorded in the Northern Territory since the beginning of the time-series in 2010. (Table 6) ASSAULT The number of victims of Assault decreased by 2% (160 victims), from 6,992 victims in 2015 to 6,832 victims in 2016. Almost two-thirds of these victims (65%) were female (4,454 victims), which was the highest proportional representation of females across the six states and territories for which Assault data is published. Victims aged between 25 and 34 years comprised 31% of total Assault victims recorded in the Northern Territory during 2016 (2,121 victims). (Tables 6 & 7) Nearly three out of four (74%) victims of Assault knew their offender (5,057 victims), 50% of victims reported that the offender was a family member (3,381 victims). This was the highest proportion of Assault by a family member across the five states and territories for which relationship of offender to victim data, as well as Assault data, were available. Source(s): Recorded Crime - Victims SEXUAL ASSAULT In 2016, the number of victims of Sexual assault recorded in the Northern Territory decreased by 6% (23 victims), from 401 victims in 2015 to 378 victims. The majority (88%) of these victims were female (332 victims). (Table 6) Around a quarter of Sexual assault victims were aged between 10 and 14 years (89 victims). Victims aged between 25 and 34 years accounted for 21% of total victims of Sexual assault (78 victims), the largest proportion of Sexual assault victims in this age group across the states and territories. (Table 7) The majority (56%) of Sexual assault victims knew their offender (213 victims), of which 129 were reported to be non-family members. Just over one in ten (11%) victims of Sexual assault reported that a weapon was used in the commission of the offence (41 victims). (Table 9) ROBBERY In 2016, the number of victims of Robbery recorded in the Northern Territory decreased by 23% (30 victims), from 130 victims in 2015 to 100. Almost two-thirds (61%) of these victims were male (62 victims). (Table 7) The majority (64%) of robberies did not involve the use of a weapon (64 victims). This was the highest proportion of unarmed robberies recorded across the states and territories in 2016. (Table 6) Source(s): Recorded Crime - Victims PROPERTY CRIME In 2016 the number of victims of Unlawful entry with intent rose by 14%, up from 3,272 victims in 2015 to 3,736 victims, to reach their highest levels since 2012. The number of victims of Other theft also increased for the third consecutive year, up by 4% or 246 victims from the previous year. In contrast, the number of Motor vehicle thefts recorded in the Northern Territory in 2016 decreased by 7% down from 872 victims in 2015 to 810 victims in 2016.
