ASSAULT

The number of Assault victims in the Northern Territory decreased in 2015, down 4% from 7,251 victims in 2014 to 6,953. Despite this fall, the Northern Territory had the highest victimisation rate for Assault of all the states and territories in 2015. (Table 31)



The majority of Assault victims were female, representing nearly two-thirds (64%) of victims. The most prevalent age for victims of Assault was 25 to 34 years for both male and female victims, accounting for nearly a third (32%) of all victims. (Table 31)

Over half (54%) of male Assault victims knew the offender; whereas 86% of female Assault victims knew the offender. For male victims, 25% were assaulted by a family member, while for female victims 64% were assaulted by a family member. (Table 32)

Over a third (37%) of female victims were assaulted in a residential location compared to about a quarter (24%) of male victims. The majority (85%) of Assault victims aged between 0 and 9 knew the offender, with a family member reported as the offender for two-thirds (66%) of victims aged 0 to 9. (Tables 33 & 35)

Weapons were used in 39% of Assault victimisations. The Northern Territory had the highest proportion of weapon use during the commission of an Assault of all states and territories. (Table 34)




SEXUAL ASSAULT

The number of victims of Sexual assault in the Northern Territory decreased slightly from 401 victims in 2014 to 391 in 2015. The Northern Territory had the highest victimisation rate for sexual assault of all states and territories. (Table 6)

Females accounted for the majority of Sexual assault victims, representing 92% of victims. (Table 7)
The most prevalent age for Sexual assault victims was 10-14 years. (Table 7)

Three in five Sexual assault victims knew the offender, with the offender being a family member in 21% of cases. For victims aged 0 to 9, 80% knew the offender and nearly half (46%) were a family member. (Table 11 & 12)


ROBBERY

In 2015, the number of Robbery victims in the Northern Territory increased, up by 11% from 115 victims in 2014 to 128 in 2015. Males accounted for the majority of Robbery victims, representing nearly two-thirds (65%) of victims. (Tables 6 & 7)

The most prevalent age among victims of Robbery was 25-34 years. (Table 7)

The most prevalent location for Robbery victimisation was community with 51% (65 victims). (Table 8)

Weapon use was more common in Robberies than any other offence, with weapons used in the commission of the offence against half of Robbery victims. The most prevalent weapon used was a knife (23% or 30 victims). (Table 9)
