ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE

In South Australia during 2014, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had a higher victimisation rate than non-indigenous people for the following offences:
  • Homicide and related offences (7.5 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 1.8 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons);
  • Sexual assault (329.1 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 83.7 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons);
  • Kidnapping/abduction (12.6 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 3.9 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons); and
  • Robbery (62.8 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 34.0 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons).
In South Australia, the proportion of victims of sexual assault who identified a family member as the offender was similar for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (34% or 45 victims) and non-indigenous victims (32% or 439 victims). A residential location was the most common location for sexual assault to occur for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-indigenous people (76% or 99 victims and 70% or 969 victims respectively).
