ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE

In Queensland during 2014, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had a higher victimisation rate than non-indigenous people for the following offences:
  • Homicide and related offences (6.4 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 1.6 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons); and
  • Sexual assault (228.5 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons compared to 69.8 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons).
In contrast, non-indigenous people had a higher victimisation rate than Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland for robbery (19.4 victims per 100,000 non-indigenous persons compared to 13.3 victims per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons).

In Queensland, a larger proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims of sexual assault were aged 0-19 years (75% or 346 victims) compared to non-indigenous victims of sexual assault (66% or 2,081 victims).
