VICTORIA There was a 4.5% decrease in the number of homicide victims in Victoria, from 89 in 2012 to a four year low of 85 in 2013. In Victoria: § 57% of homicide victims in Victoria were male (48 victims); § Around three in five homicide victims knew the offender (63% or 52 victims), with a third of all homicides being committed by a family member (33% or 27 victims); § Murder victims accounted for just over half of all homicide victims (53% or 45 victims); § The most common location in which murder occurred was a residential location (80% or 35 victims); and § Of weapons used in murder, the most common was a knife (59% or 16 victims). There was a 5.3% increase in the number of sexual assault victims in Victoria, from 4,150 in 2012 to a four year high of 4,369 in 2013. In Victoria: § The majority of sexual assault victims (87% or 3,787 victims) were female; § Victims aged 19 years and under accounted for half of all sexual assault victims (50% or 2,177 victims); § The most common location in which sexual assault occurred was a residential location (63% or 2,737 victims); and § The offender was known to 72% of victims (3,124 victims), with about one in four offenders (26% or 1,142 victims) being a family member.
