AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

In 2013, the number of victims of assault recorded in the Australian Capital Territory decreased by 11% (to 1,809 victims). The victimisation rate decreased from 539.6 victims per 100,000 people in 2012, to 471.9 victims per 100,000 people in 2013. In the Australian Capital Territory:

§ Over a quarter (27% or 493 victims) of all assault victims were aged between 25 and 34 years;

§ Males accounted for 59% (1,075 victims) of recorded victims of assault in 2013;

§ Two in five male victims of assault knew the offender (40% or 432 victims), whilst 41% of male assault victims (438 victims) identified the offender as a stranger;

§ Around three quarters (77% or 556 victims) of female assault victims knew the offender, whilst 14% of female assault victims (99 victims) identified the offender as a stranger;

§ Male victims of assault were most likely to have experienced victimisation at a community location (54% or 579 victims);

§ Female victims of assault were most likely to have experienced victimisation at a residential location (56% or 405 victims); and

§ Four in five victims of assault (83% or 1,505 victims) reported that no weapon was used by the offender.
