WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the January 2013 issue of Gender Indicators, Australia.

In this release we introduce new data and commentary on men and women awarded the Order of Australia for recognition of their outstanding achievement or service. We also present new data and commentary about the housing circumstances of men and women, including those in low income households experiencing rental stress.

Updates to indicators since last release are also included. Data from the 2012 Australian Health Survey, 2012 Survey of Education and Work, Labour Force Survey (2011-12), 2012 Australian Census of Women in Leadership (from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency), plus several other ABS and non-ABS sources have been included. We will update the Earnings series (with new data from the 2012 Employee, Earnings and Hours Survey released 23 January 2013) and Consumption of alcohol series (with new risky alcohol consumption guidelines for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women) as soon as data are available.

The product has grown to feature a current total of 51 key indicators and 47 related supporting indicators. These are spread across six major areas of social concern for gender equality (Economic security, Education, Health, Work and family balance, Safety and justice, and Democracy, governance and citizenship). Most indicators are accompanied by a written commentary highlighting key results of interest and including historical comparisons and graphs. For a quick overview of all results, visit the Summary of Key Series page.
