Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey
The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey is now closed. Thank you to everyone who participated.
You could participate in the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey if you were enrolled on the Commonwealth Electoral Roll, or made a legitimate application for enrolment, by 24 August 2017 and were eligible to vote in a federal election as at 24 August 2017.
An Australian Marriage Law Survey form or Secure Access Code was sent by post to every eligible Australian. It was sent to your address on the Commonwealth Electoral Roll.
Survey materials were mailed in a staggered delivery schedule over a two week period from 12 September 2017. You should have received your survey by 25 September 2017.
Requests for replacement materials opened on 25 September and closed on 20 October 2017.
Participation in the survey was voluntary. If you chose not to participate, you were encouraged to destroy the materials provided.
Each eligible Australian was responsible for completing their own survey. The ABS encouraged Australians to seek help from someone they trust if they needed help to complete their survey.
Your survey materials
The package containing the survey form included a Reply Paid envelope and instructions on how to complete the survey.
The Reply Paid envelope was for your survey response only and not for correspondence, complaints or other communication. Any extraneous material inserted in the envelope with the survey will be destroyed. This could also contaminate processing machinery or result in the survey also being destroyed and not processed.

How to complete your survey
The survey asked just one question: “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?”.
Instructions included the following:
- Mark one box – Yes or No – on the survey form.
- Use a dark pen.
- Put your form (and nothing else) in the enclosed Reply Paid envelope.
- Put that envelope in the mail (no stamp needed)… straight away, if you can!

When a response is deemed invalid
A response may not be valid if:
- Both boxes are marked.
- The printed barcode on the form is missing or altered.
Returning your survey form
Only one survey response was accepted for each eligible Australian.
To ensure your response counts, the ABS strongly encouraged you to post your completed survey to the ABS straight away.
The ABS cannot accept surveys received at the address after 6pm (local time) on 7 November 2017.

Requests for replacement materials opened on 25 September and closed on 20 October 2017.
Were you moving or travelling during the survey period?
If you weren't at your enrolled address during the survey period, you could arrange to have your mail forwarded or ask a trusted person to complete it on your behalf.
