HOUSEHOLD SURVEYS
OBJECTIVES
The newly established Household Surveys program consolidates a range of statistical expertise associated with the delivery of high quality household surveys. The program is responsible for the development, design, processing and dissemination of household surveys, and will play a critical role in maintaining the ongoing delivery of a comprehensive social and population statistical program through the period of the ABS Statistical Business Transformation program. The program will also lead continuous improvement in household survey methods and operations and contribute to the incremental implementation of business process improvements. Lastly, it will actively support the realisation of ABS transformation and reduce costs, improve timeliness, reduce statistical risk and reduce red tape.
OUTPUTS
The main outputs of the Household Survey Branch come from the delivery of the Household Survey program (detailed separately across statistical programs in this publication). The outputs include supplementary surveys conducted as part of the Monthly Population Surveys, the Multi-Purpose Household Survey program, cyclical large scale Special Social Surveys and other partnership projects, such as the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (conducted in partnership with the Department of Social Services and the Australian Institute of Family Studies).
Key outputs include:
- delivery of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey
- publications, microdata and TableBuilder products and supporting documentation from the following surveys: National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey; the General Social Survey; the Survey of Income and Housing; the Patient Experience Survey; the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children; the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers, 2015; the Multi-Purpose Household Survey and Monthly Population Survey; and the National Health Survey.
DEVELOPMENTS
The main medium-term developments in the program are to:
- apply professional project management practices to ensure the delivery of a timely, efficient, reliable and relevant household survey program - ongoing
- continue to implement best practice in survey data capture, coding, cleansing, processing, estimation and dissemination - ongoing
- design and develop survey methods that maximise data quality while improving respondent experience - ongoing
- develop the next waves of the Personal Safety Survey, Longitudinal Study of Australian Children and the Coordination of Healthcare Survey - ongoing.
