AGRICULTURE STATISTICS
OBJECTIVES
The Agriculture Statistics program provides timely and relevant data to inform decision making by the Australian and state and territory governments, industry organisations, the academic sector and the wider community on issues important for agricultural policy determination at the national, state and regional levels. These issues include the productivity and competitiveness of the agriculture sector, food security and natural resource management. Data from the program directly supports the Australian National Accounts and Water Account.

These publications provide information on agricultural commodities produced (including value) and water used for agricultural purposes.
Other key outputs from the program are:
- Land Management and Farming in Australia (cat. no. 4627.0)
- Agricultural Land and Water Ownership (cat. no. 7127.0), which provides information on foreign ownership of agricultural businesses, land and water entitlements
- Vineyards, Australia (cat. no. 1329.0.55.002), which provides information on area and production of major grape varieties, and water source and methods
- Livestock and Meat, Australia (cat. no. 7218.0.55.001), which provides information on livestock slaughtered for human consumption, including meat produced
- Livestock Products, Australia (cat. no. 7215.0), which provides information on other livestock products, including wool and poultry.
DEVELOPMENTS
The main medium-term developments in the program are to:
- undertake the 2015-16 Agricultural Census, the 2016 Agriculture Land and Water Ownership survey and the 2015-16 Land and Management Practices Survey - the information from all these collections is due to be released from mid-2017
- continue the collaborative working relationship with the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences to address the findings from the National Agricultural Statistics Review, which has considered all aspects of the agricultural statistical system in Australia - ongoing
- investigate innovative ways of acquiring data to meet user requirements beyond direct survey collection, for example via remote sensing and satellite imagery - ongoing.
