LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH BY GENDER

Ischaemic heart diseases (I20-I25) were the leading cause of death for both males and females in 2011, accounting for 11,733 and 9,780 deaths respectively. This reflects a sex ratio of 120 male deaths per 100 female deaths.

The remaining leading causes of death vary between the sexes, in part due to the incidence of gender-specific causes, such as prostate cancer. However, other causes which may not be gender-specific also showed variance between the sexes.

Causes with a high proportion of male deaths included:

  • Intentional self-harm (suicide, (X60-X84)) - 76% and 316 male deaths for every 100 female deaths
  • Trachea, bronchus and lung cancers (C33-C34) - 61.1% and 157 male deaths for every 100 female deaths
  • Blood and lymph cancers (including leukaemia) (C81-C96) - 56.2% and 128 male deaths for every 100 female deaths
  • Colon and rectum cancers (C18-C21) - 55% and 122 male deaths for every 100 female deaths
  • Ischaemic heart disease (I20-I25) - 54.5% and 120 male deaths for every 100 female deaths
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases (J40-J47) - 53.0% and 113 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.
