Federal Defendants, Australia (cat. no. 4515.0) presents statistics on defendants finalised in Australian Criminal Courts from 1 July to 30 June each year, who had at least one federal offence. The statistics are based on data extracted from administrative records held by the state and territory agencies responsible for courts administration, and include adults, children and organisations. Federal defendants include those defendants charged with only federal offences or a combination of state and federal offences. In 2011-12 the female population decreased by 22% compared to a 4% decrease in the male population. The number of defendants finalised by ‘withdrawn by the prosecution’ increased 11% and guilty defendants receiving a custodial sentence dropped by 15%. The most common federal offence in 2011-12 was Offences against justice procedures, government security and operations, which was the principle offence for 29% of all finalised defendants. This offence category, which includes offences such as tax evasion and voting-related offences, increased by 70% from 2010-11. Conversely, fraud and deception related offences decreased by 39% in 2011-12 (going from 33% of all principal offences in 2010-11 to 20% in 2011-12).
