SUBSCRIBER SECTOR

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were asked to report subscriber numbers as at 31 December 2013, according to whether subscribers were classified by the ISPs as Business and government or Household. This item is self-reported according to the way that ISPs classify their subscribers, and changes in classification may impact on relative subscriber numbers.

(a) Between survey periods, subscriber classification by sector may vary due to ISPs reclassifying their subscribers from Business and government to Household, or vice versa. Readers are advised to use these figures with caution.
(b) Dial-up and broadband figures by sector are collected by advertised download speeds, therefore these data may not equal figures reported for type of access connection, due to some broadband connections being reported as less than 256kbps.

Of the 12,397,000 internet subscribers in Australia at the end of December 2013, there were 78% classified as being Household subscribers, while 22% were Business and government.

Business and government subscriber numbers increased by 2% since the end of June 2013 to 2.7 million, while the number of Household subscribers was steady at 9.7 million over the same period. For both the Business and government and Household sectors, 98% of subscribers accessed the internet via a broadband connection.
