DEMOGRAPHICS OF THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED VIOLENCE

In addition to the information for men and women aged 18 years and over about their experience of violence, the 2012 PSS also collected a range of information about their demographics. This included age, language, marital status, education, country of birth, State or Territory of residence. This information was also collected about a person's current partner. Three characteristics have been assessed and presented in this chapter from the 2012 PSS:
  • Broad age groups;
  • State or Territory of usual residence; and
  • Disability status (refer to Endnote 1 for further information).

Men's experience of violence in the 12 months prior to the survey differed depending on their age group:
  • Men in the 18 to 24 years age group were the most likely age group to have experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to all men. An estimated 24% of the 1,111,800 men aged 18 to 24 years had experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to 8.7% of all men.
  • Men in the 55 years and over age group were the least likely to have experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to all men. An estimated 2.2% of the 2,691,500 men aged 55 years and over had experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to 8.7% of all men.

There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of violence for men in the other age groups compared to the prevalence rate for all men (refer Table 7).

Women's experience of violence in the 12 months prior to the survey also differed depending on their age group:
  • Women in the 18 to 24 years and 25 to 34 years age groups were more likely, compared to all women, to have experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey. An estimated 13% of the 1,072,000 women aged 18 to 24 years had experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey and an estimated 8.1% of the 1,625,500 women aged 25 to 34 years had experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to 5.3% of all women.
  • Women in the 55 years and over age group were less likely to have experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to all women. An estimated 1.5% of the 2,900,600 women aged 55 years and over had experienced violence in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to 5.3% of all women.

There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of violence for women in the other age groups compared to the prevalence rate for all women (refer Table 7).
