NUMBER OF INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS (ISPs)
The June 2012 Internet Activity Survey (IAS) is a reduced-scope census, and collects information from ISPs with greater than 1,000 subscribers. For further detail about the scope refer to Explanatory Note 4.
ISPs in the IAS have been classified by size according to the number of subscribers that ISPs reported at the end of the reference period. For data reported in this release the size categories are:
ISP size | Number of subscribers |
Medium ISP | 1,001 - 10,000 |
Large ISP | 10,001 - 100,000 |
Very Large ISP | 100,001 or greater |

At 30 June 2012, there were 81 ISPs with over 1,000 subscribers operating in Australia, compared with 91 ISPs in December 2011 and 97 ISPs in June 2011.
The number of medium ISPs and very large ISPs have declined since 31 December 2011. This is due to changes in reporting arrangements, takeover activity and some medium ISPs falling below the threshold for inclusion in the reduced-scope census.
