OLDER PEOPLE
Like many developed countries the profile of the Australian population is ageing, which has implications for public policy and the economy in a wide range of areas. Ageing can impact people across many domains, including health, housing, income security, and opportunities for social and economic participation, including labour force participation.
There were around 3.3 million older Australians, those aged 65 years and over, in 2012, representing one in every seven people (14%) (Table 3). This proportion has risen from 13.3% in 2009 and 12.6% in 2003.
