HOSPITAL CHARACTERISTICS

Accreditation

Hospital accreditation has been identified as an indicator of capability within the National Health Performance Framework (for further information refer to Australian Hospital Statistics 2010-11, produced by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)).
As at 30 June 2011, the main organisations used by hospitals to obtain accreditation were the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) (used by 303 hospitals) and Benchmark Certification (used by 81 hospitals). Acute and psychiatric hospitals in New South Wales were less likely to hold ACHS accreditation than Acute and psychiatric hospitals in other states (46.5% in New South Wales, compared to 74.7% in Victoria and 74.1% in Queensland). The state with the lowest proportion of ACHS accredited Free-standing day hospitals was Victoria (25.0%).
