FDV-related content (data items collected)
Provides a summary of the data items collected that are likely to be most relevant for FDV-related research, particularly within the context of the Conceptual Framework for Family and Domestic Violence, 2009 (cat. no. 4529.0). Information about data items is presented in tabular format to assist readers to gain a quick overview of the range of relevant information collected by each data source.
A common table structure has been used for all data sources to assist readers to compare availability of relevant data items across collections. Each row represents a key and common FDV-related data item. These have been specified in all tables, with ticks and crosses indicating that this information is, or is not collected by each data source respectively. Data items and categories that are not commonly collected across data sources are described in the "other" data item (or category) rows.
Each data item is presented according to whether it provides information about victims, secondary victims or offenders across the columns in the first table and in relation to FDV incidents in the second table. Person based data items describe the characteristics of the people involved and are further separated into demographic and other personal data items. Incident based data items help to describe what happened and in what circumstances. This presentation reflects the units described in the "Incident" element of the Framework; units which form the basis of our understanding of the nature of FDV. From a practical perspective, the majority of collections are also based on these units. Some data sources focus only on one of these units, whilst others can provide information about more than one. Footnotes have been provided to explain further where specific data items do not fit clearly into these categories. For example, collections relating to child protection matters do not fit neatly into these unit categories as the victim in a child protection matter is not necessarily (or usually) the victim from an FDV perspective.
Where only general information about an area of interest is available (e.g. referrals to other services were provided) but details in relation to this item are not specified (e.g. no information is available about which services the referrals were to), a tick is shown at the top level of the relevant data item only. In contrast, where detailed information in relation to a data item is available, one or more ticks are shown against the categories listed under the top data item.
Further information (such as definitions, questionnaires/ forms used /questions asked; response / collection rates for a given data item; the breadth and depth of response options for a data item) may be required by readers to inform decisions about the fitness for purpose of this data. Such information can be obtained by contacting the data custodian or agency responsible for collecting the data directly.
