There were mixed fortunes across horticultural commodities nationally in 2012-13, with favourable conditions occurring in some states and territories, and adverse conditions in others.
Apple production remained steady nationally at 289,000 tonnes, with Victoria and New South Wales the highest producing states. Production of pears fell by 8% to 109,000 tonnes with imported product impacting the industry. Despite adverse weather conditions in Victoria and Queensland, favourable conditions in New South Wales drove an increase in orange production nationally, up 3% to 401,000 tonnes. Mandarin production rose by 7% to 91,100 tonnes, with a slight reduction in Queensland, due to flooding, offset by a strong season in Victoria.
