Milk cattle The number of milk cattle in Australia was 2.6 million head at 30 June 2011, a 2% increase from 2009-10. Victoria (1.6 million head) continued to dominate the dairy industry with over 60% of the national total. Meat cattle The number of meat cattle in Australia was 26.2 million head at 30 June 2011. There were slight increases in the totals of cows and heifers and other meat cattle from 2009-10. The dominant states in the industry were Queensland with 12.7 million head and New South Wales with 5.5 million head, each reporting larger closing stocks than the year before. Sheep and lambs The number of sheep and lambs in Australia rose in 2010-11, up by 9% to 74.3 million head. Largest producing states in the industry were New South Wales with 27.0 million head, Victoria with 15.4 million head and Western Australia with 14.5 million head. Pigs The number of pigs in Australia remained steady from 2009-10 with 2.3 million head at 30 June 2011. The dominant states in the industry were Queensland with 667 thousand head, Victoria with 508 thousand head and New South Wales with 505 thousand head.
