The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducted an Agricultural Census in 2010-11.

The main objective of the Agricultural Census is to provide benchmark information on the agriculture sector for small geographic areas.

The Agricultural Census is run every five years, with the Agricultural and Resource Management Survey (ARMS) and the Agricultural Survey (AS) conducted between Censuses.


RESULTS FROM 2010-11 CENSUS

Results from the 2010-11 Agricultural Census can be found in the publications Agricultural Commodities, Australia (cat. no. 7121.0), Value of Agricultural Commodities Produced, Australia (cat. no. 7503.0) and Water Use on Australian Farms, 2010-11 (cat. no. 4618.0).


Results are presented in PDF and spreadsheet (data cube) format.
  • National results were released on 29 June 2012
  • Small area commodity data (as well as value estimates) were released on 29 November 2012
  • Small area land management data were released on 7 December 2012
  • Commodity data for the Murray-Darling Basin were also released on 7 December 2012
  • Small area water data will be released on 21 December 2012


DATA ITEMS

The 2010-11 Agricultural Census provides estimates for a range of agricultural commodity items, including:
  • Land use
  • Industry structure
  • Broadacre crops
  • Horticultural production
  • Livestock


GEOGRAPHIES

Small area data are presented for the following geographies:
  • Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) - specifically Statistical Area 4 (SA4) and Statistical Area 2 (SA2)
  • Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) - specifically Statistical Division (SD) and Statistical Local Area (SLA)
  • Murray-Darling Basin (MDB)
  • Natural Resource Management (NRM) region
