WEAPON USE AND LOCATION OF OFFENCE

In 2012, victims of assault were most likely to report that no weapon was used by the offender. This was consistent across all selected states and territories. The Northern Territory recorded the highest proportion of victims of assault where a weapon was used (40%), whilst NSW recorded the lowest proportion of victims of assault where a weapon was used (7%).

In 2012, the largest proportion of assaults against males occurred at a community location in the Northern Territory (56%), the Australian Capital Territory (54%) and South Australia (42%). In New South Wales and Western Australia the largest proportion of assaults against male victims occurred at a residential location (39% and 42% respectively).

Amongst female victims, the most common location where assaults occurred was at a residential location in all selected states and territories, except the Northern Territory. In the Northern Territory assaults against females were slightly more likely to occur at a community location (40%) or a residential location (37%).
