In October 2009, there were 1,654,000 households in Queensland. One third of these (33% or 548,300) used only one air conditioner for cooling. A further 34% (563,700) used two or more air conditioners for cooling.

Space cooling by selected household characteristics

Tenure type

The proportion of Queensland households in October 2009 using only one air conditioner for cooling was stable across all tenure types. The proportion of households using two or more air conditioners for cooling changed depending on the type of tenure.

Of households that owned their dwelling outright, 37% (201,900) used two or more air conditioners for cooling, and 41% (241,900) of households paying their dwelling off used two or more for cooling. In comparison, 23% (111,700) of households that rented their dwelling used two or more air conditioners for cooling.

Of households paying off their dwelling, 25% (145,200) did not have air conditioners or did not use any for cooling. The proportion was greater for households that owned their dwelling outright (30% or 166,100). There were 217,600 households that rented their dwelling that did not have air conditioners or did not use any for cooling, which was 45% of all households renting their dwelling (table 3.15).

Only 21% (69,600) of households with an annual income of less than $25,000 used two or more air conditioners for cooling, compared with 47% (126,500) of households with an annual income of $110,000 or more.

Only 20% (54,800) of households with an annual income of $110,000 or more did not have air conditioners or did not use any for cooling, compared with 45% (147,500) of households with an annual income of less than $25,000 (table 3.16).
