PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS
Sex and age
In 2011-12, females accounted for 54.5% of all patient separations, down slightly from 55.1% in 2010-11. The greatest proportion of separations for females was among those 55-64 year of age (17.5%), while among males, 65-74 year olds accounted for the highest proportion of separations (22.7%). The age and sex profile did not vary markedly between Acute psychiatric hospitals and Free-standing day hospitals.

The most common principal diagnosis of patients in private hospitals in Australia in 2011-12 was Factors influencing health status and contact with health services with 26.4% of the diagnoses, up from 25.9% in 2010-11. This was followed by diseases of the digestive system with 13.3% of the diagnoses, down from 13.4% in 2010-11.
These were the top two principal diagnoses in both Acute and psychiatric hospitals, and Free-standing day hospital facilities. The third most prevalent principal diagnosis in Acute and psychiatric hospitals was diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (9.7% of all separations), while in Free-standing day hospital facilities diseases of the eye and adnexa was third most prevalent (15.0% of all separations).

Procedures performed
The total number of procedures increased between 2010-11 and 2011-12 to approximately 8.7 million, an increase of 8.6%. Of these procedures, a little over 7 million were performed in Acute and psychiatric hospitals and the remaining 1.7 million procedures were performed in Free-standing day hospitals.
The greatest proportion of procedures in private hospitals were in the category of non-invasive, cognitive and interventions not elsewhere classified (51.7%), followed by procedures on the digestive system (12.5%). Examples of non-invasive, cognitive and other interventions are services such as dietary education and exercise therapy (often used for development of treatment plans, programs, case reviews or follow up to previous procedures performed). For further details of the classification refer to
Australian Classification of Health Interventions.
For Acute and psychiatric hospitals, non-invasive, cognitive and other interventions not elsewhere classified accounted for 55.0% of all procedures performed in 2011-12, up from 53.2% in 2010-11. The next most common procedures in Acute and psychiatric hospitals were on the digestive system (10.6%) and the musculoskeletal system (6.6%). For Free-standing day hospitals, non-invasive, cognitive and other interventions not elsewhere classified accounted for the highest proportion of all procedures performed on patients in 2011-12 at 38.2%, up from 38.1% in 2010-11. This was followed by procedures on the digestive system (20.3%) and procedures on the eye and adnexa (9.2%).
