CULTURAL FUNDING BY GOVERNMENT

This report presents an overview of expenditure on cultural activities funded by the Queensland Government. The data used in this report are available in the data cube for Queensland attached to Cultural Funding by Government, Australia, 2011-12 (cat. no. 4183.0) on the ABS website.

In 2011-12, the estimate of cultural expenditure funded by the Queensland Government was $608.2m or 18% of the total cultural expenditure funded by state and territory governments. This was a rise of 4% from $584.5m in 2010-11. Recurrent expenses accounted for 86% of Queensland Government cultural expenditure. The estimate of per person expenditure by the Queensland Government was $134.60.

The total cultural expenditure funded by the Queensland Government has increased 13% from $537.2m in 2007-08 to $608.2m in 2011-12.

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of Queensland Government funds on Heritage activities rose 4% to $464.2m. With the exception of Libraries, all Heritage categories had increased expenditure in 2011-12. The largest contributors to this movement were the categories of Environmental heritage and Archives with increases of $13.1m and $3.4m respectively. Expenditure on Libraries fell 3% to $55.5m.

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of Queensland Government funds for Arts activities was $144.0m, a rise of 4% from 2010-11. While the category of Other arts accounted for over half ($74.0m) of Queensland Government expenditure on Arts activities it was not a significant contributor to the upward movement with the level of expenditure remaining stable between 2010-11 and 2011-12. The categories with the largest increases in expenditure were Performing arts venues, Film and video production and distribution and Music theatre and opera with rises of 12% ($2.2m), 78% ($2.2m) and 50% ($1.2m) respectively. Expenditure on Radio and televisions services fell 31% ($2.2m).
