In 2011-12:

NATIONAL AND STATE/TERRITORY
  • Around 13,000 agricultural businesses in Australia (or 10% of the total) undertook some activity to reduce feral animal populations on their agricultural holding.
  • Almost half (47%) of the agricultural businesses managing feral animals were in New South Wales, whilst 41% were in Queensland. Tasmania reported virtually no active feral animal management.
  • Of the agricultural businesses undertaking activity to reduce feral animal populations in Australia, around 2,800 (or 21% of the total) reported management of feral goats, and 68% of these were located in New South Wales.
  • All 39 businesses reporting management of feral water buffalo in Australia were in the Northern Territory.
  • Of the 428 agricultural businesses in South Australia that reported feral animal management, 23 (or 5%) reported management of camels.

AUSTRALIAN AGRICULTURAL ENVIRONMENTS (AAE)
  • Some level of feral goat management was reported in all regions except the Temperate Coast South and Tropics.
  • Feral water buffalo management was only reported being undertaken in the Tropics region.
  • Of the 129 agricultural businesses managing feral camels, 95% (or 123 agricultural businesses) were located either in the Arid or Semi Arid regions. The highest proportion of agricultural businesses reporting feral animal management were also located in these regions (see map below).
