Collection methodology Administrative data from state/territory departments is collected using nationally agreed data specifications. This collection captures reported child abuse/neglect. In Australia, child protection is a state and territory government responsibility, and there are significant differences in how each deals with and reports child protection issues. Statistical comparisons between states and territories should therefore be treated with caution. Scope / target population All children under the age of 18 years who are involved in state/territory statutory child protection services. Coverage Only child protection matters that were notified to state and territory child protection and support services are included in this national collection. Notifications made to other organisations, such as the police or non-government welfare agencies, are included only if these notifications were also referred to state and territory departments responsible for child protection and support services.
