EMPLOYMENT RESTRICTIONS
In 2012, around 221,000 people with intellectual disability were not working (either unemployed or not looking for work). Of these people, around 24,900 people were unemployed and looking for work. Approximately 10,200 people with intellectual disability reported that they had difficulty finding work because of their own ill health or disability.
People with intellectual disability may face restrictions not only in terms of employment but also within the work place. Around 34% of people with intellectual disability found it difficult changing jobs or getting a preferred job and around 38% felt they were restricted in the type of job they could get. Other difficulties surrounding employment included a restriction in the number of hours able to work (20%), needing time off work (13%) and needing ongoing supervision or assistance (17%).
