EDUCATION AND TRAINING SURVEYS

Survey of Education and Training

Following consultation with key users of education and training statistics, the ABS has decided to discontinue the four-yearly Survey of Education and Training (SET). In its place a range of other surveys are already providing enhanced information on education and training, and there are plans to develop a new survey on work related training and adult learning.
  • The new Learning and Work Survey collects information on all qualifications held by respondents including their perception of the relevance of each qualification to their current job.
  • Information on the association between disability and education is now available every three years through the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers (SDAC) which has a large sample size to support estimates by disability status.
  • Information on education and income is available through the two-yearly Survey of Income and Housing.
  • The ABS is planning to collect information on educational attainment more frequently in the Labour Force Survey.

The most recent (final) Survey of Education and Training was conducted from March to June 2009 and results were released in March 2010.

The latest data can be found in:
Education and Training Experience (cat. no. 6278.0)

Childhood Education and Care Survey

The Childhood Education and Care Survey (CEaCS) is conducted every three years as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey. The publication also presents characteristics of children aged 0-8 years through the collection of information about the types of informal learning activities children engage in and parental involvement in the provision of informal learning opportunities.

The most recent survey was conducted in June 2011 and results were released in May 2012.

The latest data can be found in:
Childhood Education and Care Survey, Australia (cat. no. 4402.0)

Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies

The Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is a high profile survey initiated by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to collect information on adult skills and competencies. These competencies include literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills, with a particular focus on skills needed for success in the information age. This international survey compares adult skills and competencies across countries, and within countries across demographic categories, regions, sectors of industry, and levels and fields of education.

PIAAC is being conducted in 26 countries and is complementary to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)) funded the ABS to conduct PIAAC in Australia. This survey will provide continuity with the 2006 Adult literacy and Life Skills Survey (ALLS), and the 1996 Survey of Aspects of Literacy (SAL).

PIAAC was conducted in Australia between October 2011 and March 2012. Results are due to be released from March 2013.

For information about this survey on the DEEWR web site, please see http://www.deewr.gov.au/Skills/Resources/Pages/PIAAC.aspx.
