SCHOOLS

The Schools, Australia, 2012 (cat. no. 4221.0) publication contains comprehensive information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, including enrolment status (full-time, part-time, or full-time equivalent), sex, age, grade and number of students across the Government and Non-government sectors.

A commentary in the publication, entitled 'Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Students', highlights the steady increase, over time, in the number of school students in Australia who have identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander at enrolment, and their distribution across the States and Territories. The number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students staying on to Year 12 has exceeded 50 per cent for the first time, in 2012. Further information is presented in the Schools, Australia (Media Release). Tables of students' apparent rates of participation, continuation and progression for 2012 have also been released.

The Preschool Education, Australia, 2012 (cat. no. 4240.0) publication contains information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, including enrolment and attendance status, index of relative socio-economic disadvantage, remoteness area, hours enrolled and hourly fees charged at Preschool and Long day care service providers.



CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING: UNDERSTANDING THE INCREASE IN ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER COUNTS, 2006-2011

Between 2006 and 2011, Census counts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples rose by 21 per cent. This publication examines the issues underlying the change in Census counts for people identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin from the 2006 Census to 2011 Census and attempts to quantify elements of this increase. It provides an analysis of key demographic factors and selected characteristics (including educational attainment) that highlight the scope and implications of the increased population count to assist policy makers, researchers and other data users to understand and assess the impact of this change.

CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING: CHARACTERISTICS OF ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER AUSTRALIANS, 2011

This report presents a range of statistics for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Australia using results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. It provides a general overview of population structure and distribution, mobility, household composition, language, education, work, income, housing, and need for assistance. This information provides insights into the contemporary social and economic situation of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Education and training topics presented in this release include:
  • Education attendance;
  • Highest year of school completed; and
  • Non-school qualifications.

AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER HEALTH SURVEY: FIRST RESULTS, AUSTRALIA, 2012-13 (cat. no. 4727.0.55.001) - coming soon!

This publication will be released on 27 November 2013.

The publication will present data from the 2012–13 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) component of the 2012–13 Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (AATSIHS). The focus of the publication will be on long-term health conditions, health risk factors, selected social and emotional wellbeing indicators, health measurements and health-related actions. This release will include information about health risk factors by highest year of school completed for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous people.

Further results from the 2012–13 AATSIHS will be released progressively throughout 2014. The 2012-13 Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey: Release Schedule can be found on the ABS website.


THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF AUSTRALIA'S ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLES

This publication provides a comprehensive overview, largely at the national level, of the health and socioeconomic circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. While updates to this publication have ceased, the education chapters contain the most recent survey data on education and training for Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER WELLBEING: A FOCUS ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH

This publication provides information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people from data collected in the 2008 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey. It provides detailed information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children (aged 0 to 14 years) and youth (aged 15 to 24 years).

FRAMEWORK FOR MEASURING WELLBEING: ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLES

This publication describes a framework to map statistical information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the context of the interrelationships with their social and physical environments. The framework includes an education, learning and skills domain that provides data on individual characteristics as well as the social, cultural and economic environments.

ABS REVIEW OF THE INDIGENOUS STANDARD

In February 2013, the ABS commenced a project to enhance the Indigenous Standard. This is part of the normal rolling examination of all ABS standards and will review all aspects of the standard including the Standard Indigenous Question and coding procedures. The project may result in proposals, for example, to supplement the existing Indigenous Question with other questions and/or to provide more explanatory information for users of the Standard. The ABS will take into full consideration any impact on time series, as well as costs associated with any potential change to the Standard. The project will make recommendations by the end of 2013.
