Experimental Estimates of Preschool Education, Australia, 2011
The second cycle of the National Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) collection was conducted in 2011 with first release tables published in Experimental Estimates of Preschool Education, Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 4240.0) on 7 March 2012. The second release containing all published tables was released on 13 April 2012. This publication contains experimental estimates on children enrolled and attending preschool programs across Australia collected through the National Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) Collection.
We are continuing to assist all jurisdictions to align their collections to the agreed Early Childhood Education and Care Collection National Minimum Data Set (NMDS) data standards. The 2011 collection did not achieve complete alignment with these data standards. Complete coverage of the Early Childhood Education (ECE) sector has also not been achieved in 2011 with developments underway to increase the coverage for future collection cycles. As a result, the estimates presented in the 2011 publication do not represent a complete national picture of the ECE sector and have been labelled 'experimental'.
Future development of the National ECEC Collection will facilitate comparable data between jurisdictions, improve coverage, allow for greater integration with the National Schools Statistics Collection and assist with the development of the Australian Longitudinal Learning Database.
This publication represents the culmination of the work of the ABS in conjunction with all states and territories, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).
