Experimental Estimates of Preschool Education, Australia, 2010
The first cycle of the National Early Childhood Education and Care collection was conducted in 2010 with results published in Experimental Estimates of Preschool Education, Australia, 2010 (cat. no. 4240.0) on 5 April 2011, with a revised version released on 6 May 2011. This inaugural publication contains experimental estimates on counts of episodes of preschool programs and children enrolled and attending preschool programs across Australia.
Due to significant undercoverage and inconsistent reference periods in the initial iteration of this new collection, the estimates in the publication have been labelled 'experimental'.
The ABS is continuing to work closely with all jurisdictions to align their collections to the agreed Early Childhood Education and Care Collection (ECEC) data standards. A key development activity for future cycles involves the transition of three remaining jurisdictional collections from aggregate level data to nationally comparable de-identified unit record data and the delivery of LDC data from the Child Care Management System (CCMS) currently being progressed with the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). This development will allow for more comparable data between jurisdictions, greater integration with the National Schools Statistics Collection and assistance with the development of the Australian Longitudinal Learning Database.
This publication represents the culmination of the work of the ABS in conjunction with all states and territories, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and DEEWR.
