AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
Survey of Employment Arrangements, Retirement and Superannuation
OVERVIEW
The Survey of Employment Arrangements, Retirement and Superannuation (SEARS) was a household survey conducted throughout Australia from 2 April to 7 July 2007. The survey collected information from approximately 27,000 individuals aged 15 years and over. Prior to SEARS, a survey with similar focus (but with less information on retirement and retirement intentions and balancing work and caring responsibilities), called the Survey of Employment Arrangements and Superannuation (SEAS), was run in 2000. A significant change impacting the comparisons of the survey results was the change in age scope, from all persons 15 to 69 years in SEAS 2000 to all persons 15 years and over for SEARS 2007.
The aim of the SEARS is to describe the diversity of employment arrangements in the Australian work force, with the focus on those characteristics considered important in identifying newer and emerging working arrangements, the types of caring responsibilities people have and the working arrangements available to balance work and family commitments, people's retirement intentions and superannuation coverage, including the amount people are contributing to superannuation and the amount they have accrued, the changes in retirement trends over time and the income arrangements that people make to provide for retirement.
