AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
Labour Force Experience Survey
OVERVIEW
The Labour Force Experience Survey (LFES) is conducted as a supplement to the Labour Force Survey and collects a range of data about the labour force experiences of people aged 15 years or more over the 12 months prior to the survey date (between 1990 - 2005 the survey scope was restricted to people aged 15 to 69 years). It was first conducted in 1969, and has been conducted biennially since February 1995. It presents information about time spent in labour force activities, including episodes of work or looking for work, and time spent out of the labour force.
The LFES collects a range of data on time spent in labour force activities, including episodes of work or looking for work, and time spent out of the labour force. Data items contained within these topics are capable of being cross classified with Data Items Relevant to Migrants and Ethnicity and other data items such as age and sex.
Estimates from the LFES are used to monitor the extent and nature of labour force participation over an extended period and to complement gross flows estimates from the monthly Labour Force Survey in the analysis of labour market dynamics. The information is used to construct profiles of various groups within the labour force, particularly those looking for work.
