AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS (ABS)
NAME OF COLLECTION
Divorces
OVERVIEW
The Divorces collection provides data on the number of divorces granted in Australia each year. The statistics are compiled by the ABS from information supplied by the Family Court of Australia (FCA). The FCA provide combined data from the Federal Magistrates Court registries and FCA registries. Annual data are available on registered marriages dissolved classified by age, duration of the marriage at final separation and at date of dissolution, country of birth and number of children.
The Divorces collection provides important data for social program development and research and is used to help understand family dissolution. The main user of divorce data, the Australian Institute of Family Studies, has indicated that they require the data to help it achieve its legislative objectives as a statutory authority.
Data are available by the state and territory in which a divorce was registered, rather than the state/territory of usual residence of the applicants (except for 1993 and 1994).
