TableBuilder Basic
What is it?
TableBuilder Basic allows you to build your own tables of data from a range of 2011 Census classifications. You can also view and export the data in a variety of graphs and maps.
You will be able to access 2011 Census data for most topics including age, education, housing, income, transport, religion, ethnicity, occupation and more, from a single Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) to all of Australia.
It is a new product and replaces CDATA Online that was available in 2006. Don't worry - all the data you used to get in CData Online is still included, plus more!
TableBuilder Basic will be freely available on the ABS website via an interactive, easy to use interface, with maps to assist you in choosing areas. We will also create a range of predefined data tables on selected topics to help get you started.
Who is it for?
TableBuilder Basic is designed for clients with some experience using Census data and skills in constructing basic data tables.
Whether you're analysing business opportunities, want a better understanding of your market or simply want to compare data for a number of areas- this is the product for you.
It's a powerful tool that allows you to effortlessly undertake planning and research.
What's new?
The most popular features of 2006 CDATA Online will be available in TableBuilder Basic, but it will also:
- be faster and more reliable than 2006 CData Online
- be easier to use to construct your custom tables
- have improved maps for selecting your areas or displaying data thematically
A key design goal for the 2011 Census output is to allow you to explore data seamlessly across the full range of products so you get the level of detail you need. There will be lots of ways to get access to TableBuilder Basic, such as:
- when viewing a classification in the Census Dictionary you will be able to click directly through to the data in TableBuilder Basic
- when viewing a 'top ten' list in QuickStats you can directly explore the data in much more detail by clicking straight through to TableBuilder Basic.

What does it do?
TableBuilder Basic combines extensive information on Australian society from the Census with software that lets you build tables, graphs and maps.
It gives you access to map based search functions, giving you the flexibility to select and combine geographic areas of interest. You can also pinpoint a geographical landmark and collect data for areas that lie within a radial distance of that landmark.
In TableBuilder Basic you can:
- construct and customise tables of Census data (up to 300,000 cells)
- create and save custom geographies and data items
- thematically map or graph data
- download maps and graphs.
Registration is free and easy. All you need to provide is a valid email address. Registration allows you to save tables within the product for further use.
You can also login as a guest. You will have access to all the key features of the product but you won't be able to save custom geographies, data items or tables for future use. Once you experience TableBuilder Basic you will want to come back for more so it's best to register from the start.
You start by selecting a topic and we will provide a range of predefined tables on that topic - or you can build your own. You then customise the table to suit your unique individual needs by adding and removing data items from the table, change the structure of the rows and columns, sort the data, expand or collapse the levels of detail - even add totals where you need them.
2006 CData Online will still be accessible, but only with 2006 Census data. TableBuilder Basic will not be compatible with work you have saved previously in CDATA Online 2006. If you have created customised geographies or data items in 2006 CDATA Online you will not be able to use them in conjunction with 2011 Census Data.What data will be available?
