IN THIS ISSUE
INTRODUCTION
The Internet Activity Survey (IAS) collects details on aspects of internet access services provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Australia. This release contains data from ISPs with more than 1,000 subscribers operating in Australia as at 30 June 2012.
The ABS counts subscribers that have an internet connection with an ISP on the last day of the reference period. ABS subscriber statistics measure the number of 'subscriber lines' rather than the number of 'users' and therefore, counts of subscribers are not the same as counts of people/organisations with internet access. This is because some subscribers may have accounts with more than one ISP or multiple accounts with a single ISP. Conversely, there are single ISP subscriber accounts that provide internet access for multiple people/organisations (for example, universities).
Mobile handset subscriber numbers and associated data download volumes are reported in a separate chapter. All other data reported in this release exclude mobile handsets.
CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE
Reporting of internet subscriptions via a mobile handset data has changed. Previously these data were reported by whether the subscription was for a dedicated data subscription or all other standard mobile subscriptions via a mobile handset. Due to reporting issues, these data are now published as a combined total. It should be noted that dedicated data subscriptions are becoming less common.
Volume of data downloaded via Dial-up connections are no longer published separately due to their relatively low contribution and volatility in the data. However, they are still included in the total for the data downloaded estimate.
DATA QUALITY
Information about data quality provided in the Explanatory Notes and Quality Declaration must be taken into consideration when interpreting the statistics in this release.
STRUCTURE OF THIS RELEASE
There are two components to this release: web based information and Data Cubes. The data cubes contain the detailed data that underpins the tables and commentary included in the web based information.
ROUNDING
Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sum of components and the total. Proportions have been calculated using rounded data.
