DEVELOPMENTS IN ABS STATISTICS
ABS Regional Offices celebrated World Statistics Day by holding seminars and presentations which demonstrated the statistical achievements in the different Australian regions. An important feature of this unique day was the recognition and celebration of the core values of the ABS – service to the Australian community and governments, professionalism and integrity, and the commitment to these values by all ABS staff in their daily work. ABS Northern Territory Office celebrated World Statistics Day by holding a Population Census information session for external clients. Regional Director Tom Joseph spoke about the importance of the inaugural World Statistics Day and the release of the NatStats 2010 Conference Recommendations. Tarrant Moore of the Northern Territory Treasury also spoke about is experience at NatStats 2010. World Statistics Day provided a great opportunity to share with stakeholders and to thank the general community for their trust in ABS statistics and their commitment to making Australia better by providing information on their lives, households, businesses and community issues. For further information regarding World Statistics Day visit UNSD website A GUIDE FOR USING STATISTICS FOR EVIDENCE BASED POLICY Within Australian and international governments there is an increasing emphasis on the importance of using good statistical information when making policy decisions. In October, the publication, A Guide for Using Statistics for Evidence Based Policy, 2010 (cat. no. 1500.0) was released, providing an overview of how data can be used to make well informed policy decisions. ASSISTING TEACHERS WITH STATISTICAL LITERACY The latest edition of Education News (cat. no. 1330.0), the newsletter from the Education Services Unit was released in October. Education News helps teachers in both primary and secondary schools use ABS resources in their classrooms. This issue features articles that assist Maths teachers utilise CensusAtSchool to improve their students' statistical literacy, introduces the International Statistical Literacy Project poster competition and encourages teachers to visit the 'Interact with ABS Data' pages.
