PRIMARY PRODUCTION AND TOURISM IN THE NT Did you know that during 2008–09 around 4,800 cattle and 1,200 calves were slaughtered in the NT, resulting in about 1,020 tonnes of beef and 48 tonnes of veal? This and other information related to primary production and tourism in the NT was released in the Regional Statistics, Northern Territory, Aug 2010 (cat. no. 1362.7) publication. This release completed the entire content of the publication by supplementing chapters released previously in the November 2009, March 2010 and May 2010 issues. Chapters will now be updated annually on a rolling basis, with the next release scheduled for March 2011. WHO'S AFRAID OF THE DARK? People aged 15 years and over living in mainly urban areas of the NT were more likely to report feeling unsafe or very unsafe when walking alone after dark in their own neighbourhood than people living in any other state or territory in 2008–09 (6%, double the national average of 3%). A similar proportion reported feeling unsafe or very unsafe when at home alone after dark (7%), while 3% felt unsafe or very unsafe when at home alone during the day. USE OF HEALTH SERVICES BY TERRITORIANS Results from the first national Patient Experience Survey show that about three out of four people aged 15 years and over in mainly urban areas of the NT had seen a general practitioner (GP) at least once in the 12 months prior to the survey in 2009. Of those who had seen a GP:
About two in 10 people who saw a GP, and about three in 10 people who saw a medical specialist, reported that they had waited longer than they felt acceptable to get an appointment. About one third of households with children under 15 years had at least one child who had seen a GP for urgent medical care. Of these, almost two thirds (63%) reported that the child had seen a GP within four hours of making an appointment. NT REMAINS COMPARATIVELY YOUNG AND MALE The NT had the lowest median age (31.2 years) and the highest sex ratio (107.8 males per 100 females) of all the states and territories at 30 June 2009. Almost one quarter of the NT's population were children aged 14 years and under, the highest proportion of any state or territory and higher than the national proportion of 19%. NT HOUSING FINANCE COMMITMENTS CONTINUE TO FALL In trend terms, owner occupied housing finance commitments made in the NT fell for the fourteenth consecutive month in July 2010, down 4% from 339 in June to 327 in July 2010. This was the lowest number of commitments since December 2002. The trend value of these commitments fell by 5% from $94.9 million to $90.4 million over the same period. NT TOP DOLLARS LIST The highest incomes in the NT are being earned by people living in the Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) of Alyangula and Nhulunbuy, which are remote mining areas. Alyangula SLA recorded an average total income (from all sources excluding government pensions and allowances) of $61,327 in 2007–08, followed by Nhulunbuy SLA with $59,017. Completing the list of top five income areas in the NT were the SLAs of The Gardens ($54,809), Narrows ($54,764) and Fannie Bay ($54,696) in Darwin. Around two-thirds of the SLAs in the NT recorded average total incomes above the Territory average of $45,848. It provides summary statistics on a wide range of topics for the NT, including physical data, population, vital statistics, education, employment and wages, retail prices, agriculture and fishing, mineral exploration and production, building, overseas trade and tourism.
